Amendola, Shoffler net first goals in loss at Piedmont

DEMOREST, Ga.  Freshmen Christopher Shoffler and Matteo Amendola scored their first collegiate goals for Methodist men's soccer but a late goal by Piedmont College vaulted the host Lions over the visiting Monarchs by a score of 3-2 Friday evening in USA South Athletic Conference action.

Shoffler, making his first appearance in a collegiate game, earned the start, and needed only 10 minutes on the pitch to earn his first career goal to put Methodist up 1-0 early. The game looked headed for overtime after Amendola's goal in the 77th minute but Jose Linares won the game in regulation for Piedmont with an 84th minute score.

Statistically, the game was as close as the score indicated. Methodist registered 12 shots and six on goal and Piedmont logged 15 shots and seven on goal.

Location: Walker Athletic Complex; Demorest, Ga.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After three goals were scored in the first 21 minutes, the 2-1 score would stand for over 50 minutes until Amendola's perfectly placed shot on a free kick found the back of the net.
  • Unfortunately for the Monarchs, Linares drew inspiration and countered with a free kick goal of his own in the 84th minute to notch a win for the Lions.
  • Hudson Zeisman earned the assist on Shoffler's goal with an effortless lob. The long ball was sent into the box and Shoffler beat the charging Piedmont goalkeeper to the ball and put it past him for the first score of the game.
  • In the 19th minute, Victor Munoz tied the game for the Lions. Cameron Earls won possession of the ball in the Monarchs' box and crossed it to Munoz for the goal. Two minutes later, Earls scored a goal of his own to give Piedmont a 2-1 lead.

STAT FACTS
  • Methodist was awarded seven corner kicks (six in the second half) but were unable to convert those chances into goals. Cameron Verona came away with a save on a Rylan Hoerning header and two more shots were off-target.
  • A red card in the 65th minute meant that the Monarchs were a man down for the remainder of the game.
  • Shoffler led Methodist with four shots (three on target). Lawson Lamm took three shots and placed one on frame.
  • Cole Hupp had four saves in the game.
  • Cameron Earls led the way for the Lions with five shots and two on goal.
