Monarchs Unable to Crack Unbeaten Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga.  It was a very tough draw for Methodist men's soccer as the Monarchs were on the road Saturday afternoon to play an undefeated Covenant College in USA South Athletic Conference action. The host Scots defeated Methodist, 6-0.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Covenant def. Methodist, 6-0
Records: Methodist 2-5-1 (1-4-1 USA South), Covenant 8-0-1 (5-0)
Location: Scotland Yard; Lookout Mountain, Ga.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lawson Lamm was very close to putting the Monarchs on the scoreboard first with a well-placed shot on a free kick in the 11th minute. Paul Lemay earned the save on the play and the Scots were able to somehow miraculously clear the rebound out of their box. Lemay did not earn a second save but he should have after deflecting the rebound away from Hudson Zeisman's feet, stopping what would have been a sure goal.
  • Mercer Stout made Methodist pay for the missed opportunity, scoring the first goal of the game in the 12th minute and returning with a second goal in the very next minute to give the Scots an early 2-0 lead.
  • Austin Berry scored the third goal in the 25th minute. Cole Hupp earned the save on a Parker Owen shot but Berry recovered the rebound and put the ball in the back of the net.
  • The Scots tacked on three more goals in the second half.

STAT FACTS
  • The Methodist set piece defense was a bright spot, not allowing a goal off of a corner despite the fact that the Scots earned 10 corner kicks.
  • Four of the Monarchs' eight shots were on target. Lawson Lamm took a team-high four shots (one on frame).
  • The goalkeeper duo of Cole Hupp and Dylan Anderson each earned three saves against three goals allowed.
  • For the Scots, Berry and Stout each had a team-high four shots (all on goal) as Covenant registered 12 shots on target on 20 total shots taken.

UP NEXT
  • Methodist will be looking to snap their streak with a October 4 trip to Staunton, Va. to play Mary Baldwin at 2 p.m.
  • The Scots visit Berry College Tuesday at 7 p.m. in non-conference action.
