STAUNTON, VA. Methodist men's soccer on Friday afternoon visited Mary Baldwin University for the first time as the Fighting Squirrels are playing their inaugural men's soccer season. The hosts earned a 1-0 win over the Monarchs in USA South Athletic Conference action.
Both teams combined for 34 shots in the attack-heavy game. Of those 34 shots, only 13 were on target, though, and it was the Fighting Squirrels that scored in the 35th minute for the lone marker of the match.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Mary Baldwin def. Methodist, 1-0
Records: Methodist 2-6-1 (1-5-1 USA South), Mary Baldwin 6-6 (3-4)
Location: SMA Worth Field; Staunton, Virginia
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ousmane Dansoko raced past two defenders to win the ball on a breakaway and finished the fine play with a goal, beating the Monarchs' goalie in the 35th minute for the eventual game-winner.
- Methodist was held to only three corner kicks, a usual area of strength and a danger zone for its opponents. The Monarchs did convert two of those three kicks into shots but a Rylan Hoerning header went wide in the seventh minute and his shot in the 76th minute was saved.
- Methodist turned up the temperature in the second half, putting up four shots on frame after only one shot on target through the initial 45 minutes. Hoerning, Collin Hinnant, Ulises Sanchez, and Hudson Zeisman all had chances but Obdulio Argueta earned the save each time.
STAT FACTS
- It was a group effort on offense with 10 Monarch players registering at least one shot.
- Cole Hupp earned six saves between the pipes.
- Physical matches have become the norm for Methodist as there were a combined 22 fouls and three yellow cards handed out in this game.
- Somehow, Mary Baldwin put up 14 shots in the second half but was held scoreless. That's a testament to the Monarch defense forcing the Fighting Squirrels into less than desirable chances.
- Nine different Mary Baldwin players registered shots, led by Alejandro Aragon.
