Scots Hold Off Monarchs in Final Seconds

MARYVILLE, Tenn.  Trailing 65-63, the Monarchs were unable to knock down a go-ahead 3-pointer with four seconds remaining, allowing host Maryville (Tenn.) College to complete the upset over visiting Methodist men's basketball, 67-63, in USA South Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Garren Dearman finished with a team-high 18 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the field and two-of-four from behind the arc. Despite the good shooting night, Dearman surely hoped he could have made that fourth three-point attempt.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Maryville (Tenn.) def. Methodist, 67-63
Records: Methodist 10-7 (6-3 USA South); Maryville 4-12 (3-6)
Location: Baird Gymnasium; Maryville, Tenn.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs had a good look on the go-ahead shot. First, Dante Burden found Kaymon Mitchell under the basket and Mitchell made the read and made the coveted 'extra pass' and dished to Dearman in the left corner for an open three.
  • Methodist found itself trailing 62-58 with 55 seconds remaining but Burden converted a layup plus the and-one to make it a 62-61 game with 47 ticks left.
  • The Scots' Kevin Chong put Maryville ahead, 65-63, by making one of his two free throws but that also allowed for the Monarchs' potential go-ahead basket.
  • A made free throw from Mitchell at the 13-minute mark of the second half gave Methodist its largest lead of the period, a seven-point, 43-36 advantage. Kah Kordell's three tied the game at 45-all for Maryville with under 10 minutes to play and Kordell returned with another trey-ball at the five-minute mark to tie the game at 52-52.
  • Methodist started hot, jumping out to an 18-7 lead early in the first half. It does not get any hotter than Dearman's dunk to begin the game off of a Mitchell assist after he won the tip-off. In that nine-minute span, the Monarchs recorded two steals and four blocks, including two blocks, a steal, and a three from Calvin Manley while Sam Mingledoff buried two threes.
  • Maryville used a 16-0 run to take a 23-18 lead at the six-minute mark of the first half before entering halftime with a 30-29 advantage.

STAT FACTS
  • The Monarchs were outrebounded 49-25 by the Scots. The minus-24 rebound differential is the largest mark of this season. However, Methodist made up for the discrepancy by holding Maryville to just seven second chance points, despite 16 offensive boards, and having a plus-10 (21-11) advantage in turnovers. The Monarchs also owned a 14-2 advantage in fastbreak points.
  • Mitchell finished with 14 points, five rebounds, two steals, and a block while Mingledoff ended the night with 13 points.
  • Manley turned in a solid statline of nine points, eight rebounds, three steals, and three blocks.
  • Dante Burden registered five assists, five steals, and two blocks along with nine points. Burden's streak of 15 consecutive games scoring in double-digits was snapped in this game.
  • Joshua Brooks led Maryville with 20 points, five rebounds, and five assists on 7-of-12 shooting.
  • The Scots shot 48 percent (11-of-23) from the field in the second half compared to 33 percent (11-of-33) for Methodist.
  • The victory was Maryville's first home win of the season.
