Overtime Heroics in Home Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.   Connor Glenn won it overtime for Methodist men's lacrosse as the Monarchs withstood a fourth quarter rally from visiting Ferrum College to hold on for a 12-11 home opening victory over the Panthers Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.

With 1:13 remaining in the overtime period, Mark Chatt found Glenn for the game-winning goal. The Monarchs began the fourth quarter with a 9-6 advantage before Ferrum tied the game at 11-11 with 1:53 left in regulation.

Bryce Kephart led the team with four goals and the five points a piece from Matt Pemberton (three goals, two assists) and Chatt (one goal, four assists) were game-highs. Nick Lemieux was an absolute game changer for Methodist, winning 14 of his 19 faceoffs.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Ferrum, 12-11
Records: Methodist 1-1, Ferrum 0-1
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Matthew Sheinfeld's goal (with an assist from Carter Favreau) to begin the fourth quarter put the Monarchs seemingly in control with a 10-6 lead. Ferrum answered with a 5-1 run to close regulation, punctuated by three Jack Sheehan goals.
  • The Monarchs had responses for the Panthers' goals in the first half. Ferrum scored the first two goals of the game, followed by four consecutive scores from Methodist. When the Panthers tied the game at 4-4, it was again followed by a streak of four straight goals from the Monarchs. Pemberton and Kephart combined to score five of the first eight goals for Methodist.
  • Besides winning faceoffs, the difference in the game was the Monarchs' ability to take advantage of their extra man opportunities. They went four-of-seven in those chances, compared to just two-of-seven for Ferrum. Chatt even registered a goal for Methodist while they were down a man, the only such score of the game.

STAT FACTS
Kephart notched all four of his goals in the second stanza, two in a man-up situation.
Sheinfeld (two goals), Jesse Leyble (one goal, one assist), and Favreau (two assists) were the other Monarchs to register multiple points.
Andrew Mayefskie with eight ground balls recovered and Lemieux with five led the way defensively for Methodist.

Methodist was outshot, 46-28 by Ferrum, including a 23-13 differential in the second half. However, the Monarchs were entirely more accurate with 21 shots on goal compared to 20 for the Panthers. Methodist also committed more turnovers (28) than Ferrum (17).
Farwell led Ferrum with four goals and an assist, including the score to force overtime.
