Cavaliers Take One From Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Visiting Montreat College, and NAIA squad, was able to come to the Clayton Tennis Courts of Methodist University on Saturday and defeat the host Monarchs, 7-2, and the chilly conditions.

JUST THE FACTS
Final results: Montreat def. Methodist, 7-2
Records: Methodist 0-3, Montreat 1-0
Location: Gene Clayton Courts, Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Harrison Bitzberger and Bradon Ly captured a doubles point at No. 3 for Methodist in the early going of Saturday's match, allowing the Monarchs to enter singles action trailing only 2-1.
  • The Methodist duo went into overtime against Montreat's Grayson Chumley and Christian Johnson, finally defeating the Cavaliers tandom, 9-7.
  • Though Montreat would take five of the six singles bouts, the competitiveness on the courts nearly swayed the tide in Methodist's direction.
  • AJ Rogers, at No. 5, was the lone victor for Methodist in singles, winning a three-setter against Montreat's Johnson, 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 (15-13).
  • Both E.J. Stolmeijer at 2-singles and Kyle Klinek at No. 4 narrowly missed coming out on the victorious side of their matches. Stolmeijer rallied from a first-set 6-2 loss to square the match with a 6-3 win. Montreat's Jackson Plyler was able to outlast Stolmeijer in the third set super-tiebreak, though, 13-11.
  • Klinek also dropped his first set (6-3) but rebounded with a 6-4 win in the second. He, too, was unable to get over the hump in the third-set tiebreak, falling 10-7 to Garcia F. Minoldo.

NEXT UP
