Randolph-Macon Swarms Monarchs

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The visiting Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College put the sting on Methodist Sunday afternoon, rolling to a 20-3 victory over the host Monarchs in non-conference women's lacrosse action.

Lindsay Dastejerdi, Alaijah Ward and Sarena Pillow scored Monarch goals against a squad that lost in its 2019 conference tournament championship game.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Randolph-Macon def. Methodist, 20-3
Records: Methodist 1-1, Randolph-Macon 1-0
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist scored on its first shot of the game, a goal by Lindsay Dastejerdi. Unfortunately, that first Monarch shot came after the Yellow Jackets had built up a 5-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game.
  • Any momentum gained by Dastejerdi's marker was deadened by a 6-0 run from Randolph-Macon, a streak that was ended by Ward's unassisted goal during an extra-man opportunity just before the halftime break.
  • Pillow's goal came early in the second half, off a free-position chance, but that would be the final tally in the game for Methodist.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Monarch goalkeeper Jem Golombeski came up with nine saves under swarming conditions from the Yellow Jackets. Two of her second-half saves were on R-MC free-position shots.
  • Though the Yellow Jackets piled a total of 38 shots to only 13 from Methodist, the Monarchs battled fairly evenly at ground level, falling only four short of R-MC's 17 ground ball pickups.
  • Win the draw, win the game, as they say, and the Yellow Jackets finished with a 16-9 advantage in the big circle. Though usually a close match of the goal totals, Sunday's numbers proved how solid of a day it was for Methodist in battling for 50-50 balls.
  • Methodist also did a good job in its defensive third at limiting the free-position chances it surrendered, allowing the R-MC attack to generate only nine chances on the fan.
  • Kendal Cahill came off the bench to lead the team in ground balls with three, while Sam Short registered a pair of caused turnovers in the Monarchs' defensive efforts.

NEXT UP
The Monarchs have a two-week break before playing again, traveling to Guilford College on Saturday, February 29 for a non-conference bout against the Quakers.
