Split Squad Splits Day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist women's tennis split its squad Saturday for a trio of matches, hosting Guilford College at the Clayton Tennis Courts while another group tackled host and 16th-ranked University of Mary Washington and Salisbury University.

JUST THE FACTS
Final results: Methodist def. Guilford, 8-1; Salisbury def. Methodist, 8-1; Mary Washington def. Methodist, 9-0
Records: Methodist 2-4, Salisbury 2-0, Mary Washington 1-0
Location: Gene Clayton Courts, Fayetteville, N.C.; University Indoor Tennis Center, Univ. of Mary Washington, Fredericksburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Allyson Hays and Sydney Bird picked up Methodist's first point of the afternoon, literally, with a momentum-building, 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles against Guilford's Abby Boohar and Megan Kimpel.
  • The other two Methodist doubles tandems also swept aside Quaker foes to push the Monarchs into singles action with a commanding 3-0 lead at home.
  • Victoria Trevino led the charge in singles play, coasting to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Boohar at No. 4, just before Natalie Collins finished off a 4 and 1 win at No. 3 to clinch the match victory for Methodist.
  • Kamdyn Balko at No. 2, Casey Carroll at No. 5 and Savannah Lee at No. 6 also followed with straight-set wins for the Monarchs.
  • The road was a bit rougher in Fredericksburg, as Methodist claimed victory only at 3-singles against Salisbury, with Jill Lawrence's straight-set 3 and 1 win.
  • Things were even tougher against nationally-ranked Mary Washington at the conclusion of the day as the host Eagles surrendered just five games to the Monarchs in their home win.

NEXT UP
The team again will split the next time Methodist hits the courts on Saturday. At home on the Clayton Courts one group will face Hollins University, while the road crew heads to the University of Lynchburg.
