LYNCHBURG, Va. Methodist earned a non-conference women's tennis victory Saturday over host University of Lynchburg, 5-4, getting the match-clinching point from
Jill Lawrence in a three-set win at No. 3 singles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The see-saw affair opened with a doubles win at No. 2 for the Methodist pairing of Taylor Jackson and Victoria Trevino, 8-5, over Grace Teefey and Elizabeth Teefey.
- Lynchburg squared the match with a win at 1-doubles, but Kamdyn Balko and Sydni Lewis provided a go-ahead point with their narrow, 8-7 win in the No. 3 spot.
- Lynchburg evened the match again with the opening point in singles action, but Methodist moved back ahead with Valeria Mutate's straight-set, 6-0 and 6-2, win at 5-singles, then earned a fourth point at No. 4 where Jillian Garrett also won in two, 6-4 and 6-0.
- A three-set victory for Lynchburg at No. 6 followed by a straight set Hornet win at 2-singles tied the match for the third time, with only one more flight still out on the courts -- Lawrence and Lynchburg's Ellen Druebbisch at 3-singles.
- Lawrence came back from an opening set loss, answering with consecutive set victories in her 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 win that clinched the victory for her Monarch teammates.

The Monarch women split in two on Sunday, with one group hosting Winston-Salem State at the Gene Clayton Courts in a 1 p.m. match, while the other half travels to Hollins University for a 2 p.m. away match in Roanoke, Virginia.
