Late Game Heartbreak, Late Game Heroics in Armstrong Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.   Methodist baseball played to a draw on the final day of the Armstrong Invitational, losing to Penn State Abington, 7-4, in the first game, but defeating the University of Lynchburg, 5-4, in the nightcap Sunday evening.

Both games featured late game heroics and heartbreak, depending on one's rooting interest. Against PSU-Abington, Methodist surrendered four runs in the top of the ninth, but Game 2 the Monarchs redeemed themselves by scoring two runs in the eighth to recover the lead and earn the victory against Lynchburg.

Jacob Austin played the role of "hero" in the win after doubling to score Matthias Carter for the game-tying run and then scoring the go-ahead run after a Hornets' fielding error. Errors by Lynchburg (four in total) allowed the Monarchs to claw their way back into the game despite registering just four hits.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final Score: PSU-Abington def. Methodist, 7-4; Methodist def. Lynchburg, 5-4
Records: Methodist 5-4; PSU-Abington 2-1; Lynchburg 3-3
Event: Day 2 of Armstrong Invitational
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Austin tied the game with his double in the eighth, two Hornets' errors, one by the pitcher and one by the third baseman, resulted in him scoring the game-winning run.
  • In the fifth, the Monarchs scored two runs to take a 3-2 lead after an error on Lynchburg's pitcher. The pitcher fielded a Jordan Cassell bunt and sailed the throw to first over his fielder's head.
  • Austin scored the first run of the game for Methodist in the fourth thanks to his walk and two wild pitches before finally scoring thanks to an interference call on the Hornets' third baseman.
  • The Monarchs had gaffes of their own which could have proved costly. Lynchburg tied the game at 3-3 after an infield error in the sixth and the Hornets capitalized on an outfield error in the eighth for the go-ahead 4-3 score. What should have been a fly out in the eighth turned into the batter reaching third base and then scoring on a wild pitch.
  • Game 1 was tied at 4-4 in the top of the ninth. With a 3-2 count and two outs, Zach Morales sent the game-winning liner past the third baseman to drive in three runs for the 7-4 score.
  • Methodist came out the gate in the first game hitting rockets. With two outs in the first inning, Alex Kachler tripled to left field and Tucker Criswell cleaned up with a triple to right center. Criswell stole home to give the Monarchs an early 2-0 lead.
  • Penn State Abington tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth inning by converting hits in four straight at-bats into three runs. Clay Richardson scored in the sixth off of a Lions' error to move Methodist back in front, 4-3.

STAT FACTS
  • After the two extra base hits in the first inning of Game 1, the Methodist bats went cold. The Monarchs registered just four hits through the next eight innings. Matthias Carter led the team with his two hits, both doubles.
  • Tristen Luck started on the mound for Game 2. After giving up three hits and two runs in the first inning, Luck settled down and allowed just three hits in the next six innings. He pitched seven innings, including six scoreless and finished with five strikeouts.
  • It was Elliot Mann that earned the win on the mound in the nightcap. Making his first collegiate appearance, Mann went two innings and allowed one hit and one unearned run.
  • Lance Fuerstenberg pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless baseball and allowed just one hit. He entered the first game one with one out and the bases loaded in the fifth and recorded two outs in consecutive at-bats to escape the jam.
  • Kachler was the only Monarch to record a hit in both games. Rob Wilkerson drew three combined walks on the day.
