Monarchs Win Bash-fest at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Pitching was not the headline act Tuesday at Guilford College's McBane Field, as Methodist and the host Quakers combined for 38 runs in a 7-inning (darkness) 25-13 Monarch non-conference victory.

Guilford pushed four runs across the plate in its initial at bat, only to have Methodist run 14 batters up to the plate in the top of the second inning, in which it recorded a 10-spot for a lead never relinquished.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Guilford, 25-13 (7 inn.)
Records: Methodist 7-4, Guilford 3-4
Location: McBane Field; Greensboro, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The momentous second inning began with not a bang but a throwing error that allowed leadoff batter Tucker Criswell to take first base.
  • A Rob Wilkerson walk and a bunt single by Clay Richardson -- remember that name -- jammed the bags for big-hitting Ethan Carmack…who drew an RBI walk to plate Methodist's first run.
  • Eventually Wilkerson came back around to the plate and singled to push Jacob Austin and Alex Kachler across for the seventh and eighth runs of the frame.
  • Richardson -- told you! -- then hammered a shot over the left-center field fence for his second hit in the inning and the final two runs of the frame.
  • A four-run third inning from the Monarchs put another crooked number up on the scoreboard, following Guilford's one-run second inning, elevating the Methodist advantage to 14-5.
  • Pitching was not the headline act on Tuesday (see above…and below).
  • Guilford scored seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to close to within two runs, at 14-12, but Methodist scored five in the fifth, two more in the sixth, and another four in the top of the seventh while limiting the Quakers to a single run over those three frames.
  • The umpires made the decision after the seventh to halt the game on account of darkness, allowing the Monarchs to claim the victory.

INSIDE THE BOX
  • Methodist took advantage of nearly every opportunity in the game, finishing with just four runners left on base over the merry-go-round seven innings.
  • Kachler knocked his first home run of the season in the game, and added a single and a double to fall only a triple short of hitting for the cycle. He also walked twice.
  • Freshman Zach Epperson also belted one where no one could catch it, as a pinch-hitter and registering his first collegiate dinger.
  • Criswell and Jordan Cassell added doubles to the Monarchs' extra-base-hit afternoon.
  • However, patience at the plate was also at a premium for Methodist as batters drew 12 walks and earned three hit-by-pitches.
  • Tucker led the way in the RBI column with five, with Kachler adding four and Richardson chipping in with three.
  • Austin and Matthias Carter -- who worked for four base on balls -- each scored five runs.
  • Lance Fuerstenberg (2-0) earned the victory on the mound for Methodist, coming in in the bottom of the fourth with just one out and then finishing the game, going 3.2 innings, allowing just a pair of runs on four hits and two walks, while striking out three.

HISTORY
  • Last year the Monarchs defeated Guilford, 17-4.
  • Methodist's 25 runs ties not-so-recent game-highs: a 25-12 win against Stevenson University on April 25, 2010; and a 25-4 victory at Shenandoah University on March 8, 2009.

UP NEXT
Methodist begins league play with its next series, heading to Danville, Virginia, on Saturday and Sunday when it will face host Averett University in a twinbill on Saturday and a single game the next day.
