Baseball Earns Win #1 In Conference Play

DANVILLE, Va.  In the first game of its USA South Athletic Conference slate, Methodist baseball earned a 9-3 win over host Averett University Saturday afternoon.

The four runs the Monarchs scored in the second inning would have been enough for the victory but Methodist added three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth to file the game away.

Alex Kachler and his two doubles and four RBIs, plus a walk and a run scored fueled the Monarchs while Jacob Austin had a sixth sense for home plate, resulting in three runs scored, as well as two hits and an RBI.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Averett, 9-3
Records: Methodist 8-4 (1-0 USA South), Averett 0-10 (0-4)
Location: Owen-Fulton Field; Danville, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Monarchs scored four runs with two outs in the second inning. Matthias Carter drew a walk to load the bases, Austin singled to score one, a hit by pitch added another run, and a wild pitch on a triple steal scored two more runners.
  • Kachler had the perfect counter to the Cougars cutting the deficit to 4-3. His left field double scored Carter and Wesley Hall and Rob Wilkerson added a sacrifice fly for the seventh run.
  • Kachler and Wilkerson each earned another RBI in the sixth. Kachler doubled down the left field line to send Austin home and Wilkerson doubled down the right field line to score Kachler.
  • Averett scored three runs in the third, thanks to three singles, a double, and a Methodist error in the outfield.
  • The Cougars somehow managed to convert 10 walks and seven hits into just three runs, resulting in a ridiculous 16 runners left on base. Of the 16 Cougars left stranded, 11 were in scoring position.

STAT FACTS
  • Wesley Hall had two hits and scored two runs. Carter turned his two walks into two runs.
  • Wilkerson and Tucker Criswell each finished with one hit and a walk.
  • Lance Fuerstenberg now has a 3-0 record in six relief appearances this season. He earned the win in this game by pitching 4.2 scoreless innings and allowing just one hit with four strikeouts.
  • The seven stolen bases for Methodist tied a season-high.
  • As if 16 players left stranded were not bad enough, the Cougars ended the inning with bases loaded on three separate occasions.
  • Tanner Bradshaw led Averett with two hits and two walks.
