SALISBURY, Md. Methodist men's tennis finished Sunday with a trio of losses -- 5-4 to Goucher College, and a pair of 7-0 losses to Division II Lenoir-Rhyne University -- but the first defeat of the day could easily have been a win for the Monarchs against Goucher.
Playing at a neutral site (Salisbury University) Sunday morning, Methodist and the Gophers battled their way through five singles matches that went three sets, winning three of the marathons. But Goucher's 2-1 edge after doubles action allowed its three singles victories to stand up on the team scoreboard in a match that could easily have tilted in Methodist's favor.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Hayden Wilfong and Tyler Kane salvaged a doubles point in the Goucher match, securing the marker with an 8-4 win over Omosesan Adebamgbe and Slade Dumas at No. 2 doubles.
- Goucher added a third point with a straight-set win at 1-singles, but the other courts were toe-to-toe battles.
- Coleman Baker won the opening set at 2-singles, 6-3, before the Gophers' Michael Herman squared the match with his own 6-4. The third-set tiebreaker went Baker's way as he earned a 1-0 (10-8) set win for the match point.
- Henry Murray at No. 4 followed the same script, winning the first set, dropping the second, but rallying back with a 1-0 (10-4) tiebreak win in the third.
- At 5-singles it was Kane downing Adebamgbe, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (4) for another hard-fought Methodist point.
- Goucher earned its match victory, though, with points from a Dumas win (2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (6)) over Wilfong at No. 3, and a Frankie Mullinix win (6-7(5), 6-3, 1-0(8)) against Henry Blanco at 6-singles.
- Against Lenoir-Rhyne, Methodist earned moral points at 1-singles in both matches, as EJ Stolmeijer fought to 6-4, 6-2 defeat in the opening match, and Luke Laney battled in a 6-3, 6-2 defeat at the top spot in the late match.
