Coach Ron Simpson Notches MU Career Win #500 in Sweep

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.   In the first game of a non-conference doubleheader, head softball coach Ron Simpson earned his 500th career win at Methodist with a 4-3 eighth-inning victory over Piedmont International University. The Monarchs completed the sweep and earned coach's 501st career victory with a 9-8 comeback against the Bruins Thursday evening.

In both contests, Methodist had to recover from a late-game deficit to earn the win. Kelsey Smith's sacrifice fly scored Bethany Junker in the walkoff win of Game 1 while the Monarchs had to recover from a 8-2 fourth inning deficit of the nightcap. Taylor Jacobs doubled to score Maria Kollar for the go-ahead run in the sixth inning.

Bethany Junker led the team in the doubleheader with a combined five hits, three runs scored, and three stolen bases. Bethany Jones went the full eight innings in the first game to earn the win, allowing no earned runs and striking out six batters. Jordyn Propst got the "W" for game 2, pitching four innings and allowing just three hits and one earned run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bruins crossed seven runs in the third and fourth innings of the nightcap to take a commanding 8-2 lead over the Monarchs. Methodist responded with a phenomenal two-out rally, scoring five runs in the fourth to cut the deficit instantly to a one-run game. Reagan Parks and Carleigh Haywood led things off with consecutive singles followed by Sarah Davis reaching on an error to load the bases. Junker's single scored Parks, Maria Kollar's walk crossed Haywood, and Kelsey Smith cleared the bases with a left field double.
  • Davis tied the game at 8-8 in the sixth when the Bruins' catcher tried to pick her off at third base and committed an error. T. Jacobs notched the game-winning RBI when her hit fell between the second baseman and the outfielder and scored Kollar.
  • In the first game, two bunts scored the runner from second in the eighth to give the Bruins the 3-2 lead. Methodist promptly tied the contest when Junker singled to score Haywood. After a steal of second, Kollar's single moved the game winning run (Junker) to third, and Smith flew out to centerfield for the walk-off.
  • Kollar blasted a homer over the right field fence in the first inning to give Methodist the early 1-0 lead. T. Jacobs added run #2 in the fourth, scoring on a throwing error. Piedmont Int'l tied the game in the fifth after consecutive RBI singles.

STAT FACTS
  • Eight Monarchs totaled 11 hits in Game 2, led by Junker's three hits and Smith's two. Davis scored three runs in that game, a team-high.
  • Junker, Kollar, and Jacobs were the only Methodist players to register a hit in Game 1, each logging two base hits.
