THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. No. 22 Texas Lutheran, 11-8
Records: Methodist 2-1, Texas Lutheran 1-2
Location: Air Hogs Stadium; Grand Prairie, Texas
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jacob Austin's sixth-inning RBI single into center field scored Ethan Carmack to trim the deficit to four, followed by reliever Hunter Barnes' 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half of the frame.
- The rally in the seventh began with Clay Richardson's one-out walk and then a single from Rob Wilkerson that scored Richardson on a throwing error. Then Wilkerson stole third and pinch-hitter Elliot Manley walked to put runners on the corners.
- Carmack's single up the middle pushed Wilkerson and Manley across the plate, cutting the deficit to just one run.
- A Carmack steal of second turned into a runner at third base on a throwing error by the catcher, and the situation became even more dangerous when pinch-hitter McKinley Strickland walked.
- Strickland advanced to second on an infield groundout that held Carmack at third, but only temporarily as Austin against singled into the outfield, this time allowing two runs to score and elevate Methodist into the lead, 8-7.
- Texas Lutheran answered with a tying run in the bottom of the seventh, but now the Monarch bats had awoken, and the added two more in the eighth and another in the ninth.
- Meanwhile, Barnes -- who had averaged just over an inning and a half of work per appearance over his first three years in the program -- was dealing on the mound, scattering three hits over 4.1 innings of relief, fanning seven and earning the win, his first W since the 2018 season.
INSIDE THE BOX
- Austin, Alex Kachler and Wilkerson each collected three hits in the Monarchs' 17-hit attack.
- Wilkerson had two of Methodist's three extra-base hits, claiming a double and a triple during the victory. Richardson's triple was the other Monarch XBH.
- Austin collected three RBIs on the day, while Wilkerson and Carmack registered two apiece.
