HOW IT HAPPENED
- Haywood singled to the shortstop to lead off the third followed by a bunt single from Bethany Junker. A sacrifice bunt from Kelsey Smith moved Haywood and Junker to third and second base, respectively, before Jones' RBI.
- The Monarchs added a second run in the fifth when Junker used a sacrifice bunt to score Reagan Parks. Parks reached first on a bunt and utilized a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch to move to third.
- Methodist had opportunities to tack on even more runs in the sixth and seventh innings. With Claire Cummings on first, Heather Tsapp doubled in the sixth inning. Cummings was unable to get the elusive fourth base as she was thrown out at home by the shortstop. In the seventh, the Monarchs left runners stranded on the corners.
- Guilford's chances came early in Game 1. They had runners on second and third with one out in the first, which resulted in no runs and loaded the bases with two outs in the second with no results.
- The second game was still a relatively close game at the start of the fourth inning with the Quakers ahead 5-1. However, Guilford exploded with a eight-run fourth inning to force a potential mercy rule ending.
- Maria Kollar homered in the second inning to put Methodist on the board and Junker returned in the fifth with a single to score Liz Schmitz. Junker's single loaded the bases but the Monarchs were unable to add anymore runs to avoid the run rule.
STAT FACTS
