Wilkes Rallies in Singles Against Monarchs

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C.  Methodist exited doubles action with a lead, but Wilkes (Pa.) University rallied in singles play to take a 6-3 win from the Monarchs in non-conference women's tennis action.

The match against the Colonels was originally slated for a 9 a.m. start but morning storms washed away that start time, and it was pushed to the last match of the night, 9 p.m., at the Chapin Park Tennis Center.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Wilkes def. Methodist, 6-3
Records: Methodist 7-5, Wilkes 3-1
Location: Chapin Park Tennis Center; Hilton Head Island, S.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wilkes struck first with a doubles point at No. 1, but the Monarchs bounced back with a win from Sydni Lewis and Kamdyn Balko at 3-doubles to square the match.
  • Jill Lawrence and Abby Caddick teamed up at No. 2 for a solid 8-4 win that pushed Methodist in front, 2-1, heading into singles action.
  • Wins at Nos. 2 and 4 lifted Wilkes back in front, but Jillian Garrett battled for the tying point at 5-singles with a three-set victory.
  • Garrett won the opening set, 6-3, but the Colonels' Dagney Markle answered with a 7-5 second-set win. Garrett prevailed in the third-set tiebreak, 1-0 (10-4), to bring the Monarchs back to even in the team score.
  • Wilkes won the final three matches left on the court, however, to complete the come-from-behind victory.
  • A morning match scheduled against Albion (Mich.) College was also washed away, but not rescheduled.
