JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Mary Baldwin, 2-1
Records: Methodist 6-1 (3-0 USA South), Mary Baldwin 5-4-1 (1-1-1)
Location: SMA Worth Field; Staunton, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The deciding marker came on the second of two corner kick opportunities for the Monarchs in the final minute of the first half.
- Haley Strain struck a low line-drive into the goal box area that was just out of reach of a charging Rachel Johnson. MBU goalkeeper Anyka Wilkin had converged on Johnson, though, and with Wilkin now out of position the Strain service into the box reached Burge, unmarked in the center, for an easy tap-in for the freshman's first collegiate goal.
- The opening goal came off a caused turnover by Madison Brunson just past midfield in Methodist territory.
- After regaining possession following her defensive poke, Brunson pushed a ball toward the top right corner of the box where Alexis Lemon collected it after outracing a defender. Wilkin came out far in trying to cut down Lemons' angles but the tactic didn't work as Lemons slid a well-placed shot past Wilkin and just inside the right post in the 27th minute.
- The Fighting Squirrels came out of the halftime break exerting great pressure in their attacking third, halving the deficit 63 seconds into the period with a 30-yard shot from Annie Ammons that squeezed under the crossbar and over the gloves of goalie Mary Newman.
- Mary Baldwin had another dangerous opportunity three minutes later but Newman made a diving stop on a header to preserve the lead.
THE NUMBERS
- Mary Baldwin, despite the loss, ended the contest with advantages in total shots (19-12) and shots on goal (9-7).
- Monarch netminder Caley Justice started the game and earned the win making two saves in her 45 minutes between the pipes. Newman made seven saves in the second half, including one final stop late in the 89th minute.
