DANVILLE, Va. Methodist football jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half to get a 31-24 victory over Averett University in a USA South Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Campbell Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs would find the end zone on their first possession of the game. A couple of passes from Brandon Bullins to Xzavier McNeil and Wade Thomas, for 20 and 17 yards respectively, brought Methodist into the Cougars territory.
- A pass interference call on Averett put the Monarchs into the red zone, where eventually running back Tyquan Eaddy scored from one yard out.
- Methodist defense forced a three-and-out on the Cougars first drive giving the Monarchs the ball back. Six plays later, Methodist scored their second rushing touchdown of the game, a 13-yard run by Keyshaun Pete, to go up 14-0 in the first quarter.
- On the ensuing drive by Averett, they were able to move the ball this time. Back-to-back 33 yard passes by Bryce Jackson brought the Cougars to the Monarchs 4-yard line. Their drive came to abrupt halt when DaQuinton Grady picked off Jackson in the end zone.
- Methodist would chew up the rest of the first quarter before scoring on their third consecutive drive of the game, in the second. They marched down 80 yards on 12 plays, finishing with a 5-yard pass from Bullins to Thomas for a 21-0 lead.
- The next Cougar drive saw Jackson pass for 48 of the total 63 yards to bring his team to the Monarchs 2-yard line. A two yard run by Bryce Phipps gave Averett there points of the contest.
- Before the half was up the Cougars would tack on three more points with 36-yard field goal to make it 21-10 heading into the break.
- The second half saw Averett starting with the ball but just four plays later it would end up in the hands of the Monarchs. Roderic Christian Jr. came up with a fumble recovery after an Omarion Jones force.
- This led to Methodist third rushing touchdown, a 1-yarder by Eaddy. Pete had a large part in this drive as he caught an 18-yard pass and had a 30 yard run.
- The next Monarch drive saw them punt the ball away but a muff by the return man gave Methodist the ball back, with Nate Jones getting on top of the ball at the Cougars 14-yard line. Unfortunately, a Bullins interception three plays later ended the drive.
- Four plays later, Averett scored their second touchdown of the game. A 14-yard pass from Jackson to Nick Andrews made it 28-17.
- At the start of the fourth quarter, Methodist had 1st and goal at the Cougars 2-yard line. The Monarchs had to settle for a Trevor Hargett 18-yard field goal after an Averett goal line stand.
- On the ensing kickoff, the Cougars had a big 55 yard kickoff return to set themselves in Methodist territory. Five plays later a 15-yard strike from Jackson to Chase Nixon cut the Monarch lead to seven.
- After three straight punts, Averett got the ball back close to midfield with 3:16 left on the clock. A 24-yard pass brought it to Methodist's 32-yard line. The next three plays only saw the Cougars move five yards to make it 4th and 5.
- With the game drawing to end, Averett went for it but failed after their receiver dropped the ball for a turnover on downs.
- The Cougars would get the ball on last time with 17 seconds left but two plays later a second interception by Grady sealed the win.
MORE TO IT
- Methodist ended the game with 418 total yards, 135 rushing & 283 passing. Making it back-to-back games with over 400 yards of offense.
- This is the first time this season Bullins has thrown more than one interception in a game.
- The Monarch offense converted on 61% of their third down plays, 11 of 18, while Averett only converted on 30%, 3 of 10.
- Leading the way on the Methodist defense was Bryce Jordan, who had a team-high 12 tackles.
