JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Brevard, 31-27
Records: Methodist 5-2 (5-1 USA South), Brevard 5-4 (5-2)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs offensive looked sluggish to start the game with their first two drives totaling seven plays for 18 yards. The third drive finally saw the offense move the ball, after a good punt return by Kobe Praylow that brought it within the Tornadoes 40-yard line.
- On a 3rd-and-3, Bullins connected a 26-yard throw to Wade Thomas to Brevard's two-yard line. It would take three tries but Methodist capped off a seven play, 39-yard drive with a one-yard plunge by Tyquan Eaddy.
- The next Tornado drive looked like it was going to be a 3-and-out when the punt team came on the field. The next snap saw the up man take the direct snap and run 28 yards for a fresh set of downs. This would prove to be a moot point as they came away with no points after a missed 30-yard field goal by Stamati Damalos.
- With the Monarchs backed up in their own territory, they marched 80 yards for a touchdown. A couple of big pass plays by Bullins to Wade and AJ Cooper, respective 21 and 12, helped bring them down the field. Leading up to Bullins airing a 27 yarder down the left side of the field to Xzavier McNeil in the end zone.
- Brevard scored their first points of the contest on the ensuing drive when they chewed up nearly seven minutes of clock to go 69 yards on 14 plays. The quarterback Eli Carr ran it up the middle from one yard out to make it 14-7.
- The Tornadoes tied at 14-14 on their next possession, after a punt pinned them at their own 3-yard line. It took only one play for Mitchell Yoder to find an open hole and gallop 97 yards to the house.
- Two plays later, Methodist responded back with a big play of their own, when McNeil caught a 20 yard pass before running for the next 48 yards for a 68-yard touchdown reception.
- Damalos would tack on a 32-yard field goal for Brevard before halftime to make it 21-17 at the break.
- The only score of third quarter was another Damalos field goal for a score of 21-20 heading into the final quarter.
- A Trevor Hargett 22-yard field goal pushed the Monarch lead to 24-20 before the Tornadoes took their first lead of the game. Yoder once again took the hand off and bounced it out to the left for 60 yards to put Brevard up 27-24.
- With four minutes left in the game, Methodist got the ball back at their own 40-yard line. Bullins then engineered a nine play, 60-yard drive for Eaddy to rush in for his second touchdown of the game with 42 seconds left.
- The Tornadoes would drive down to the Monarchs 11-yard line with one second on the clock before Methodist called a timeout. The next snap saw a pass thrown to the end zone where Bryce Jordan was to get his hand on it to deflect the pass and seal the win.
