JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Piedmont def. Methodist, 77-75
Records: Methodist 1-5, Piedmont 3-1
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions struck first with a basket by Jordan Foote, but then Jeremy Mull scored the first five points for the Monarchs. Eventually Piedmont reclaimed the advantage with an 8-0 run before jumpers by Tomas Stevens and J'Quan Deal put Methodist back in front 16-13.
  • Scoring the next five points were the Lions to put on top 18-16. Piedmont used another 5-0 run a minute and half later for a score of 23-18. The final six minutes saw the Monarchs outscore the Lions 16-14 to close out the half, for a 37-34 halftime score.
  • Early in the second part of the game, Methodist used a 30-second span to score six straight points to put them in the lead 43-40. A few minutes later, Piedmont went on an 8-0 run, with the help of two threes, to flip the score in their favor 50-45. Eventually the Lions made a double-digit difference when they scored seven unanswered points.
  • George would then make to layups for four of the next six Monarch points to bring the score back to within three, 65-62. With 2:14 left in the period, Stevens knocked down a three-pointer to make 74-73.
  • Later Methodist had the ball down 77-75 with 29 seconds left in the game. Two different Monarchs had chances to send the game into overtime with their shots in the final seven seconds but both would hit off the rim.
MORE TO IT
  • Despite being a close game, Piedmont was deadly from behind the arc in the game. Hitting 10 of their 17 shots for a percentage of 58.8. Methodist only made four of their 16 attempts for a percentage of 25.
  • Turnovers and points off those was the biggest factor in the late push for the Monarchs. They forced 21 Lion turnovers and turned it into 34 points.
  • Even though both sides had 11 chances at the charity stripe, it was Piedmont who converted two more than Methodist, 6-4.
