Foul Trouble Cost Methodist Game Over Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va.  The Methodist women's basketball got into foul trouble as they drop their season opener 57-50 to Randolph College in non-conference action on Sunday at Giles Gymnasium.

The Monarchs, who went 9 for 15 on free throws, had 19 team fouls to send the Wildcats to the charity strip for 25 times, with them connecting on 17 of them. Which proved to be the deciding factor in the contest.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Randolph def. Methodist, 57-50
Records: Methodist 0-1, Randolph 2-0
Location: Giles Gymnasium; Lynchburg, Virginia

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Freshman Jillian Peterson got the season started with a three for the first points of Methodist young season. A bucket by Aniyah Tate gave the Monarchs a 5-0 lead a minute and half into the game. After Randolph tied it at 5-5, layups by Tate and Zykeria Jenkins put Methodist back in the lead.
  • Despite being down midway through the opening frame, the Wildcats finished strong. In the final five minutes of the quarter Randolph outscored the Monarchs 9-3 to take the lead 14-12.
  • A three followed by a steal and layup pushed their lead to 21-14, early in the second quarter. Methodist answered back with a layup and a three of their own, respectively by Jenkins and Melissa D'Oleo, put them two points back again. Eventually the Wildcats went on a 6-0 run to push the deficit to eight, 29-21. The Monarchs would head into halftime down 32-26.
  • Randolph pushed their lead to double digits after scoring the first four points in the third frame. Peterson went on to score the next eight points for Methodist, two threes and a layup, to bring them back within two. The Wildcats stopped the threat by making back-to-back baskets and a free throw for a score of 41-34.
  • Heading into the final quarter the score was 49-40 in favor of Randolph. Just like the previous period, The Wildcats came out with four quick points in the first minute of the fourth. Tate scored four of the next six Monarch points to bring them back 53-46.
  • After a pair of made free throws by Randolph, a free throw by Jenkins along with a layup by D'Oleo got them to a six point difference. That would be the closest Methodist would get the rest of the contest.
STAT FACTS
  • Peterson led all Monarch scorers with 14 points in her first collegiate game. Also with tying the game-high two steals.
  • Tate came a couple of rebounds shy of a double-double, recording 11 points and eight rebounds while going 5 for 8 from the field.
  • Fellow freshman D'Oleo had a nice overall game with seven points, six boards, three assists, and two steals.
  • Even though Methodist was lost the rebound battle 54 to 43, they actually had more second chance points than the Wildcats (15 to 14).
