FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Methodist men's basketball made the thing interesting by getting within five points but ultimately fall 70-63 to the University of Mary Washington, in a non-conference match, Wednesday night in the March F. Riddle Center.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Mary Washington def. Methodist, 70-63
Records: Methodist 1-8, Mary Washington 7-2
Location: March F. Riddle Center; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs jumped out to a 6-2 advantage before the Eagles recorded seven consecutive points to go up 9-6. Dante Burden scored the next four points for Methodist to keep the Monarchs within striking distance of Mary Washington's 14-10 lead.
- The Eagles slowly would increase deficit little by little with the three-pointers they were making in the first half. Of the 19 threes they took, eight of them got knocked down to where it seem like when Methodist got a bucket, Mary Washington would hit a shot from downtown. This led to a 39-26 halftime score in favor of the Eagles.
- In the second half, the Monarchs were able to bring the score back to single digits with help from a 7-0 run, including five straight points scored by Chris George. Mary Washington broke the run up with another three before Kevin McLaughlin Jr. nailed a three-pointer of his own to keep it at an eight point difference, 44-36.
- The Eagle started to pull away late in the contest by ballooning the deficit to 18 points with 2:10 left. Just when it looked like the game was over, including Mary Washington who started to put in their bench players, the Monarchs did not roll over.
- Methodist would go on a 13-0 run, in a minute span, with threes by Clayton Coe & McLaughlin Jr., and steals by Derrick Newberry which led to buckets for him brought the score 68-63 with 19 seconds left. Alas, that was the best the Monarchs got to the score as time expired.
MORE TO IT
- George had his best game of the season by recording his second career double-double (19 pts. & 10 rebs.) to go along with four assists and two blocks. Newberry performed well himself, with ten points and career-high six steals.
- Including the eight made threes in the first half, the Eagles added three more for a total 11 made threes on 26 attempts (42.3%). This, rebounds (43), and second chance points (23) proved to be the deciding factors as Methodist struggled to keep up.
