Dearman and Burden Shine but Greensboro Gets Win

GREENSBORO, N.C.  Dante Burden and Garren Dearman combined for 44 points but it was not enough on the road against Greensboro College as the Pride snagged a 82-65 upset victory over Methodist men's basketball in USA South Athletic Conference action Friday afternoon.

Two days ahead of Valentine's Day, Burden flirted with a triple-double, putting up an incredible stat line of 24 points, eight rebounds, six assists, and two blocks, all team highs. Dearman added 20 points, five rebounds and four steals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • With Methodist leading 52-45 with under 10 minutes to play, Greensboro went on a game-flipping 21-4 run to take command of the contest. Keyshawn Dorsey gave the Pride their first lead since the score was 16-14, when he made two free throws to go up 53-52.
  • Dearman cut a deficit down to 67-61 with 3:20 remaining but four Greensboro free throws promptly made it a double-digit game again.
  • Free throws were a recurring theme for Greensboro in the second half. The Pride were sent to the charity stripe a whopping 29 times in the final stanza, making 25 of those opportunities. Greensboro only had four such attempts in the first half. Meanwhile, Methodist had a game total of just 17 shots from the line.
  • Clayton Coe's three-pointer off a Burden assist put Methodist ahead 42-33 in the second half, tying its largest lead of the game. 

THE NUMBERS
  • The Monarchs' seven-game conference win streak was snapped. Methodist had not lost in USA South play since February 18, 2020.
  • Burden was a very efficient 11-of-19 shooting, including two-of-five from three. Dearman was also tidy, going 5-of-10 from the field.
  • Chris George was second on the team with seven rebounds and third on the squad with six points.
  • Four Greensboro players scored in double-digits, led by Greyson Collins' 21.

UP NEXT
  • The Monarchs host Greensboro College in the Riddle Center on Sunday, February 14 at 2 p.m.
  • The next season series for Methodist is against N.C. Wesleyan College. The Monarchs host the Battling Bishops on Friday, February 19 at 4:30 p.m. before traveling to Rocky Mount, N.C., on February 21 for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
