MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. Methodist kicked off its delayed start to the 2021 season with a trip to the University of Mount Olive on Sunday afternoon, where the Division II Trojans treated their D-III guests with little kindness on the field, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader, 12-0 and 8-0.
THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Mount Olive def. Methodist 12-0 (5 innings); Mount Olive def. Methodist 8-0 (5)
Records: Methodist 0-2; Mount Olive 3-3
Location: Nancy Chapman Cassell Field; Mount Olive, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The day's opener saw the Trojans score crooked numbers in all but one inning, while Mount Olive starting pitcher Hannah Killough held the Monarchs hitless in five innings of work.
- Starter Brittany Jones and reliever Alyssa Barwick were on the wrong side of the circle in Game 1, surrendering 12 earned runs between the two of them. Jones did register three strikeouts in her two innings in the circle.
- A four-spot in the bottom of the first was all the Trojans needed in its eventual 8-0 Game 2 shutout of the Monarchs. Methodist had several baserunners in the game, though, getting singles from Claire Cummings and Taylor Jones, and free passes for Haley Potter and Bri Caton.
UP NEXT
Methodist moves back to D-III competition with its next outing, a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in the 2 p.m. home opener at Price Field.
