Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Strong Start Leads to Strong Victory at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va.  Methodist scored six of the first seven goals of Sunday's non-conference men's lacrosse game at Randolph College, and the Monarchs would go on to register a resounding 16-4 win over the WildCats on their home turf at WildCat Stadium.

The opening salvo was more of a one-man show by Matt Pemberton, who netted the initial five Monarch tallies -- the first coming 37 seconds after the opening faceoff.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Randolph, 16-4
Records: Methodist 1-1; Randolph 0-3
Location: WildCat Stadium; Lynchburg, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED.
  • Pemberton was the cog that got the Monarch machine rolling, scoring those initial five markers before adding the final goal of the half -- for a 7-2 Methodist advantage at recess -- and the opening goal of the third quarter.
  • The junior would finish the day with eight goals -- a new Methodist single-game record -- and an assist for a nine-point afternoon. His previous single-game career best had been four goals, on more than one occasion.
  • Also writing his name in the Monarch record book was Mark Chatt, whose six assists were also a single-game program high.
  • The Methodist attack was overwhelming, accumulating 53 shots in the contest, which resulted in such an advantage in possession that the Monarchs allowed just 19 WildCat shots all game.
  • Possession starts at the faceoff dot and Methodist was nearly unbeatable there, collecting 20 of the 24 faceoffs in the game. Carter Favreau was 8-for-10 at the dot, with Tyler Bennett 8-for-8 and Patrick Rowell 4-for-6.
  • Favreau scored two goals off his own faceoff wins.
MORE NUMBERS.
  •  Besides their nearly 2-to-1 lead in shots, the Monarchs scooped up a 36 ground balls compared to Randolph's 17.
  • The deficit could have been even greater for Randolph if not for the 18 saves made by WildCat goalkeeper William Doyle.
  • In comparison, starting goalie Cameron Brink earned the win between the pipes needing to make just five saves. Brink, in the 52nd minute, gave way to Jackson Bulkin who made one save, with Matthew Liquori standing in between the pipes for the final 2:27 of the contest.
