DANVILLE, Va. In the opener for USA South Athletic Conference play, Averett University notched two league victories over visiting Methodist softball Saturday afternoon. The Cougars won the first game, 6-0, then won Game 2, 6-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs' lone run of the day came in the seventh inning of Game 2. Haley Potter singled to right field and two Averett errors advanced Potter to third before she scored with an RBI credited to Bethany Junker.
- Two singles and two doubles turned into four runs as the Cougars broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the third inning of Game 2. In the first game, Averett jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings and added another three runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
- Junker, Potter, Sara Darling, and Kaley Evans registered the Monarchs' four hits for the day. Darling also drew three total walks.
- Kaitlyn Aherron (nine strikeouts and the shutout) and Hannah Thompson (four K's, no earned runs) got the wins for Averett.
