Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson

Win #99 Comes in Home Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Playing at home at the Duggins Soccer Stadium for the first time this season, Methodist women's soccer defeated visiting -- and previously unbeaten -- Greensboro College, 4-2, in USA South Athletic Conference play Saturday evening.

Three unanswered Methodist goals completed the rally as Head Coach Bryan Madej advanced to 99 career victories. Alexis Lemons tied the game at 2-2 in the 32nd minute and then assisted on the go-ahead goal from Aiden Sherry in the 69th minute.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. Greensboro, 4-2
Records: Methodist 3-0-1 (3-0-1 USA South); Greensboro 3-1 (3-1)
Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After leading for just 35 seconds in the game, Sherry gave Methodist the lead for good when she booted in a goal in the bottom left corner past the Greensboro keeper in the 69th minute. The score was made possible by Cheyenne Ferrin crossing the ball to Lemon, who tapped it to an unmarked Sherry.
  • The assist came after Lemons tied the game with a goal of her own. A Gillian Niesel free-kick attempt was deflected off the crossbar and Lemons charged in with a header for the game-tying score.
  • The goals came fast in this game as Methodist scored 49 seconds into the game and Greensboro countered with the tying score 35 seconds later. By the five-minute mark, Greensboro was leading 2-1 after another Pride goal.
  • Both Greensboro goals were over-the-moon shots from well outside the box, shots that were lofted over Maggie Hunt's head for scores. Laura Harris scored the first goal of the game after a misplayed cross by the Pride's keeper resulted in Harris footing in an open-net score.
  • For her first collegiate goal, Madison Rizer got revenge for Hunt with a rainbow goal that left orbit and passed over the Greensboro goalie's head. The score gave Methodist a 4-2 lead in the 77th minute and Maddie Hernandez earned the assist after recording the interception on the defender's pass.
  • Methodist outshot Greensboro, 12-7, and held a 6-3 edge on shots on target.
