CARY, N.C. 1993. That was the last time that Methodist women's soccer was undefeated through its first five games and with the Monarchs' 3-1 defeat over host William Peace University in USA South Athletic Conference action Wednesday night, the 2020-21 Monarchs have joined illustrious company.
While simultaneously being the Monarchs' best start in over 25 years, Head Coach and Methodist alum
Bryan Madej also earned his 100th career victory. Goals by
Madison Brunson and
Aiden Sherry were the difference in the game. It was Sherry's fifth goal of the season as she has scored in every contest this year, and Brunson earned her first collegiate goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Dribbling on the left wing, Laura Harris beat two defenders before tapping it inside to Brunson in the 4th minute. Brunson's shot was so well placed into the upper right corner that the Pacers' goalkeeper could not even make a play on the ball.
- The Monarchs' lead improved to 2-0 with a score in the 30th minute. Methodist attempted a cross and the ball glanced off the defender and the keeper before finding the back of the net for goal No. 2.
- The Monarchs had a 2-0 lead at halftime, scoring two goals off their two shots on target in the first 45 minutes. A relatively defensive first half saw the Monarchs attempt three shots total and the Pacers attempt two shots total with one on frame.
- The Pacers cut their deficit to 2-1 in the 77th minute. From the top, right corner of the box, Kyra Delaney's shot attempt off the free kick was saved by Maggie Hunt but Kayla Johnson was at the right place (at the far post) at the right time (directly after Hunt's punch-out save) to head in the goal.
- The Monarchs returned the lead back to a two-score game less than two minutes later. In the 78th, from just outside of the box, Sherry sent a floater towards goal that beat the keeper inside the right post for a score.
- There was more action in the second half as Methodist attempted seven shots and William Peace took five. However, the accuracy was still lacking as just two MU shots and three WPU shots were on target in the second period.
- In 1993, the Monarchs started 6-0 before finishing with a 17-2-1 overall record, complete with an NCAA Division III tournament appearance.
