Monarchs Sweep Pacers in Conference Opener

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  The Methodist women's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over visiting William Peace University, taking the shutout in the USA South Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Two of the Monarch points came via default wins, but the dominance in the other seven bouts was evident.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score:
Methodist def. William Peace, 9-0
Records: Methodist 4-5 (1-0 USA South); William Peace 1-2 (0-1)
Location: Clayton Tennis Center; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Already up a point after the Pacers' default at No. 3 doubles, the Monarch pairings in the Nos. 1 and 2 spots made quick work of their opponents to earn all three doubles points.
  • Abby Caddick and Sydni Lewis won an 8-2 decision at 1-doubles, and Toni Laney and Taylor Jackson teamed up for an even more impressive 8-1 win at No. 2.
  • The Pacers were forced to forfeit a point at 6-singles, for a fourth Methodist point, and the clinching point came very quickly as Laney swept William Peace's Camryn Straughn at 2-singles, 6-0 and 6-0.
  • Jill Lawrence at No. 3 and Megan Kidd at No. 4 nearly matched Laney's results, winning their bouts only surrendering one game to their Pacer foes.
  • Caddick took a 3 and 3 win at No. 1, and the shutout was complete with Jaela Willner's 6-1, 6-2 victory in her first collegiate match.
UP NEXT
