STAUNTON, Va. Erica East and her 16 kills dominated the four-set match as the Monarchs earned their first victory of 2021 with a 3-1 win over host Mary Baldwin University in USA South Athletic Conference women's volleyball action Sunday afternoon.
East was surgical as she had 16 kills to just three errors for a percentage of .317.
Kaeli Ryan also registered new career-highs with 11 kills and four solo blocks.
Megan Andrews added a team-high 18 digs and three service aces, plus 10 kills. The trio benefited from the assists of
Hannah Hewett. She had 43 of the team's 48 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist had two separate runs of 5-0 in the fourth set, the difference in a 25-17 set win. The first run extended a 7-6 lead to 12-6. East had three consecutive kills in that span. The second run took an 18-13 lead to a 22-13 advantage. Methodist won the game on a Mary Baldwin error.
- The first set was the most impressive as Methodist won 25-14. The Monarchs won the set, despite surrendering the first four points. Tied at 13-13, Methodist went on a 12-1 run to clinch the set. The Monarchs clinched with three straight kills, two from Ryan and the winning kill from East, all assisted by Hewett.
- Methodist won the first four points in set #2 but the Fighting Squirrels found themselves leading late, 19-17. Andrews delivered with three consecutive kills to tie the game at 20-20 and the Monarchs reeled off five consecutive kills to win the second set. East had three of the five kills but the go-ahead kill and set-winning kill went to Leann Sessoms.
- The third set went Mary Baldwin's way by going on a late 5-1 run to flip a 15-14 deficit into a 19-15 edge. Ahead 24-21, the Fighting Squirrels clinched the set with a kill.
MATCH NOTES
- The Monarchs had 10 kills with just one error for a percentage of .333 in set #1.
- Sessoms had nine kills and two total blocks. Kendall Craig had four kills and two total blocks.
- Maddie Barga tied the game-high with 18 digs. Janie Harmelink had 15 digs, third on the team.
- Jade McGrath had a team-high 10 kills for Mary Baldwin.

- The Monarchs' next game is a home doubleheader against Averett University on Saturday, March 20. The first game at 12 p.m. will be considered a conference contest.
- Still searching for their first win, the Fighting Squirrels travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Friday, March 19 for a doubleheader against William Peace University. The first contest, slated for 4 p.m., is a league matchup.
