Cougars Get Leg Up in Divisional Race

DANVILLE, Va.  In an important men's tennis match within the USA South Athletic Conference's East Division on Sunday afternoon, host Averett University earned a 6-3 victory over Methodist, pushing the Monarchs into third place within the division.

As nothing is really 'normal' nowadays, the league adapted a one-year format change to its spring postseason sports in which only the top two teams from the East and West divisions would qualify for the conference postseason, playing division championships with the winners advancing to the conference championship match.

The loss likely means the Monarchs will now need to defeat top-seed North Carolina Wesleyan College later in the season to have a shot at making the East Division championship match.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Averett def. Methodist, 6-3
Records: Methodist 3-8 (1-1 USA South), Averett 4-1 (1-0)
Location: Averett Tennis Courts; Danville, Va.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Cougars were able to jump out to a 2-1 lead in doubles with only Trent Harner and Coleman Baker teaming up for an 8-5 Methodist win at No. 2.
  • Averett wins in singles at Nos. 3 and 4 put the hosts on the brink of victory, but Jordan Theron delayed a Cougar celebration by downing Jorge Figueroa, 6-1 and 6-3, for the second Monarch point.
  • Methodist inched closer in the team scoring when Coleman Baker won a second-set tiebreak at 6-singles (6-4, 7-6(4)) for consecutive Monarch wins, but the Cougars were finally able to clinch the match at No. 2 in straight sets then added one final point with a straight-set win at No. 5.
EXTRA, EXTRA
  • The loss ends a three-match win streak over the Cougars that Methodist had been enjoying.
  • Theron is 5-2 at 1-singles, winning his last three in a row and counting losses to opponents from Division I Richmond and D-II Mount Olive.
UP NEXT
  • Methodist will step out of conference action for its next three matches, hosting D-I College of Charleston on Saturday, March 27, followed by a Sunday home match against D-II Lenoir-Rhyne University.
  • The last of these three matches is scheduled for April 3 at home against future conference member Southern Virginia University.
