Men's Soccer Closes Out Season With Draw at SVU

BUENA VISTA, VA.  Methodist answered every Southern Virginia University goal with a goal of its own, leading to a 2-2 double-overtime draw on the road in non-conference men's soccer action Thursday afternoon.

The Monarchs had prompt responses for every Knights goal. When SVU took a 1-0 lead, Collin Hinnant tied the game six minutes later, and after the Knights went ahead 2-1 with a goal in the 65th minute, Trent Powell returned scored the equalizer in the 69th.

MATCH NOTES
  • Powell's equalizer came less than four minutes after the Knights had retaken the lead. Off a corner kick from Hinnant, Victor Longa Pachkov attempted a header towards goal but it was blocked. No less than five Southern Virginia players had a chance to clear the ball but instead, the deflection landed right at Powell's feet and he beat the keeper for a goal from inside the six-yard box.
  • It was Ammon Lewis that gave Southern Virginia the lead, Lewis beat two defenders on the left-wing, and from the top of the box, he drilled a shot into the right corner of the net.
  • Hinnant tied the game at 1-1 following his penalty kick goal in the 22nd minute. Hinnant chose the right corner for his shot and the keeper dove left. The penalty was awarded after a bad tackle attempt by the Knights' goalie on Christopher Shoffler.
  • Dylan Heaton gave Southern Virginia the first goal of the game when he sent an absolute heater from almost 30 yards out over Cole Hupp's outstretched arm and into the back of the net.
  • Hupp's efforts in goal forced the two overtimes. Hupp weathered a storm that included 19 shots (nine on goal) from the Knights in regulation. In the final 11 minutes of the second half, Hupp recorded four tough saves. Altogether, Hupp had eight saves and faced 23 shots.
  • That was Hinnant's second goal of his career and his first goal since scoring in his collegiate debut 22 games ago. For Powell, this was his first of the season and fifth of his career.
  • The game closes out the Monarchs' season, but was a preview of further battles with the Knights, who will be joining the USA Athletic Conference beginning with the 2021-22 academic year.
