Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse | | Ja'Shawn Steward-Johnson

Brink Leads The Charge

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.   The Monarchs jumped out to a big 7-1 first quarter lead, which provided the foundation for Methodist men's lacrosse 16-11 Senior Day victory over visiting William Peace in USA South Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.

The Monarchs scored seven unanswered goals in the first period after the Pacers had scored the opening marker. A 10-4 halftime lead swelled to 16-6 after Methodist outscored William Peace, 6-2, in the third quarter to cement the victory.

Cameron Brink had 17 saves, two shy of his career-high. He faced a William Peace offense that actually out shot the Monarchs, 50-45, and tied them in shots on goal (28). When both teams put up the same amount of shots, like today, the difference in the game is the quality of the goalie and Brink is quality.

THE ESSENTIALS
Final score: Methodist def. William Peace, 16-11
Records: Methodist 4-3 (2-1 USA South); William Peace 2-7 (0-3)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED.
  • Matt Pemberton scored with 7:04 remaining in the third period to give Methodist a 12-5 lead and Harrison Williams won the ensuing faceoff, leading to Carter Favreau's goal for No. 13. Leading 13-6, the Monarchs closed out the third period with three consecutive goals. Pemberton's and Matthew Sheinfeld's scores for goal Nos. 14 and No. 15 came 22 seconds apart.
  • Sheinfeld capitalized on the man-up opportunity of the lifetime as three Pacers were in the penalty box for his goal. With an assist from Chris Andes and both teams at even-strength, Hunter Vaughan scored 52 seconds after Sheinfeld.
  • Three goals in three minutes moved Methodist ahead 3-1 at the nine-minute mark of the first quarter. Vaughan added two goals, along with scores from Jesse Leyble and Favreau for the 7-1 lead. The Monarchs' penchant for ground balls was the difference in the first quarter as ground ball recoveries immediately preceding five of the seven goals.
  • After a 3-1 run by William Peace in the second period cut the deficit to 8-4, Ryan Kavounis scored the last two goals of the quarter for Methodist.
  • It was "too little, too late" for the Pacers in the fourth quarter. They scored five goals in the last period and held Methodist without a goal for a final score of 16-11.

  • Williams was dominant, winning 15-of-25 faceoffs and recovering a game-high 11 ground balls. Favreau and Leyble each scooped up five ground balls.
  • Meanwhile, the Pacers' starting keeper had a rough day, allowing six goals and earning just one save during his short time on the field. Brewer Warlick led the William Peace attack with four goals.
