MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. Methodist track and field on Saturday finished out the two-day schedule of the 2021 Adidas Trojan Challenge, hosted by University of Mount Olive, enjoying personal bests (PR) on both the track and in the field events.
Setting a new PR and inching closer to the school record in the women's 1,500-meter run was
Makayla Lawler. The senior placed second in the event with a time of 4 minutes, 50.97 seconds, now just seven seconds away from the school record.
Three Monarchs set PRs in the men's 1,500, led by
Xavier McLamb's 4:24.70. Will Gray (4:25.34) and
Baron Gossman (4:37.01) also recorded new personal bests.
McLamb on Friday evening PR'd in the men's 3,000, finishing in fourth place with a time of 9:32.87.
The 800m was another good event for the Methodist men as
Stephen Dukes (2:00.78),
Austin Ezzell (2:01.99) and Gossman (2:08.22) all placed in the top 25. Dukes was ninth, just missing a PR by 9/100ths of a second, with Ezzell finishing 10th in a new PR, and Gossman posting a PR in 21st place.
Richard Staley posted PRs in two events, setting a new best in the 400m at 53.73 seconds, then adding another in the 200 with a time of 23.49.
Ethan Ward, with a PR of 23.16, led the Methodist sprinters in the 200, finishing 21st.
In the field events, it was
Hannah Williams earning a pair of new personal bests on Saturday. Williams has a best toss of 19.94 meters (65 feet-5 inches) in the women's discus throw, after achieving a new PR in the javelin (14.75m, 48-5) earlier in the day.
Isaiah Cuthrell broke 40 feet for the second meet in a row in the men's triple jump, placing eighth Saturday with a best leap of 12.25m (40-2.25).
AJ Matthews hit the sand in the men's long jump with a new PR, touching down at 5.56m (18-3) for an 18th-place finish.
In the throws,
Andrew Clark and
Jordan Bediako each recorded a new best at the Challenge. Clark was 18th in the men's shot put with a throw of 9.26m (30-4.75), and Bediako was 19th in the discus with a new PR of 27.21m (89-3).
Methodist will return to Mount Olive for its next outing, The Trojan Relays on Saturday, April 10.
