Every Win Counts; Monarchs Add Two with Sweep

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  As Methodist baseball passes the halfway mark in the USA South Athletic Conference schedule, the Monarchs added two important league victories with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Greensboro College Sunday afternoon. Methodist won the first game, 5-2, and took Game 2 by a score of 12-4.

The sweep gives Methodist a 6-4 record in conference play, one win behind William Peace (7-4 record) for second place in the East Division standings. Due to ramifications from the COVID-19 pandemic, the USA South has reduced its 2021 tournament field to only the top two teams from each division. The Monarchs and the Pacers have a pivotal three-game series in Cary, N.C., starting on Saturday, April 17.

JUST THE FACTS
Final scores: Methodist def. Greensboro, 5-2; Methodist def. Greensboro 12-4
Records: Methodist 13-13 (6-4 USA South), Greensboro 8-11 (0-5)
Location: Armstrong-Shelley Field; Fayetteville, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Hard to argue against the Monarchs' start to the day as they led the first game off with back-to-back triples from Will Dagenhart and Christian Yarbrough. Yarbrough scored Dagenhart and Rob Wilkerson scored Yarbrough.
  • Each team scored a run in the third inning due to defensive errors. Methodist added a second run in the inning for a 4-1 lead, thanks to a Jordan Cassell double scoring Wilkerson. Wilkerson was in scoring position after singling up the middle and stealing second base.
  • Wesley Hall made the defensive play of the day in the first game. With two runners on, including the tying run on first, and one out in the top of the seventh, Hall fielded the ball cleanly, stepped on the third-base bag, and launched a rocket to first for out No. 3. The double play held Greensboro to just one run scored on three hits in the inning and Methodist answered immediately with a run of its own. Yarbrough singled to reach first base, advanced to third due to a failed pickoff attempt, and scored off of a wild pitch.
  • A 6-4 game in the bottom of the eighth inning of Game 2, Methodist exploded for six runs to effectively secure the win. Methodist turned four hits and two Greensboro errors into the six runs. Hall led things off with a double to left center, followed by a Spencer Nelson single, and Hunter Hollman was hit by a pitch for a no-out, bases-loaded situation. Two errors led to three runs and Yarbrough (one) and Cassell (two) batted in the additional runs.
  • Greensboro had cut the deficit to 6-4 with a two-run homer in the seventh from Devin Brackin.  Methodist had started the homerun festivities with a three-run blast to right center from Nelson in the third for a 5-1 lead and a solo shot to right field from Wilkerson in the fifth for a 6-2 lead.
STAT FACTS
  • Yarbrough had identical stat lines of two hits and a RBI in each game. In Game 2, Cassell led with three hits, plus two RBIs, and Nelson had a game-high three RBIs with two hits and two runs scored. In the first game, Wilkerson had two hits and an RBI. He scored three runs in the second game, adding a hit, a walk, and an RBI.
  • Will Walker got the win on the mound for Game 1 by surrendering just two runs (one earned) and striking out five in seven innings of work. Ryan Hill earned his third save of the season after two innings of no-hit baseball to close the contest. William St. Leger got the Game 2 win after seven innings.
  • Eight of the nine runners that the Pride left stranded in Game 1 were in scoring position. Ultimately, Greensboro converted 12 hits into just two runs.
  • For Greensboro, Michael Garvey Jr. was a ridiculous four-for-five with two runs scored and a double in the first game.
NEXT UP
  • Methodist and Greensboro will finish its three-game series matchup with a single game on Monday, April 12 at 6 p.m. at Armstrong-Shelley Field. A Methodist win would see the Monarchs get level with William Peace in the standings ahead of their weekend clash.
  • The Monarchs have a midweek, non-conference road game against Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. in Ashland, Va.
  • After the three-game road trip against Methodist, Greensboro College welcomes Roanoke College to Ted Leonard Park for an April 14 non-conference contest at 6 p.m.
