FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. After overtaking visiting Southern Virginia University late for a 7-3 win in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader, the Monarchs could not recapture the same magic, dropping the second game, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon.
Methodist was trailing 3-2 for most of the first game but a five-run sixth inning allowed Methodist to seize control.
Brittany Jones tied a season-high with 10 strikeouts in that game. The victory was also her seventh of the season, the most in a single campaign for the senior.
Southern Virginia will be joining the Monarchs in the USA South Athletic Conference beginning in the 2021-22 academic year. The Knights are moving into the USA South from the Capital Athletic Conference.

GAME NOTES
- The runs came fast in the first game. There were a combined five runs scored through two innings, with the Knights leading 3-2. Southern Virginia turned six hits (two doubles, four singles) into three runs. Methodist scored two runs in the first inning after a sacrifice fly from Taylor Bowen and an RBI-single from Kaley Evans. Bowen scored Bethany Junker and Evans scored Heather Tsapp, who had a double to left field in the inning.
- Then, for three innings, the bats went quiet. The middle innings contained just three hits combined before Methodist exploded in the sixth. Claire Cummings tied the game with a hit up the middle that scored pinch-runner Bethany Jones. Caitlyn Holland pushed the Monarchs ahead with a bunt single to score Ashlynn Elliott.
- A 4-3 lead for Methodist was not satisfactory enough as the Monarchs added another three runs for a total of five in the inning. Taylor Jones had a double down the left-field line that scored two and in the next at-bat, Junker doubled as well for one RBI.
- The Knights again scored two runs in the first inning of Game 2. Sydney Dolan hit a two-RBI triple and then their bats went cold for the remainder of the game.
- Unfortunately, the Monarchs could not muster enough offense this time. Taylor Jones batted the team's lone run in with a single to score Elliott. The inning ended with runners left on second and third, plus an out that occurred at home plate.
- In addition to Tsapp, Junker, and Taylor Jones, Liz Schmitz also had a double in the first game. Schmitz, Holland, and Taylor Jones logged a hit in each game.
- Alyssa Barwick was in the pitcher's circle for Game 2, giving up just two runs and five hits in the seven innings.
