FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. Visiting Pfeiffer University continued its blitz of the USA South Athletic Conference with a 27-12 win over host Methodist men's lacrosse Saturday afternoon.
JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Pfeiffer def. Methodist, 27-12
Records: Methodist 5-5 (3-3 USA South), Pfeiffer 9-1 (7-0)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, N.C.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Kit Allman put Methodist on the board first when he recovered a ground ball off of a saved, but not controlled, shot attempt and managed to beat Pfeiffer's goalie for the opening score. The goal came after three consecutive Methodist shot attempts had been saved in a span of 20 seconds. Matthew Sheinfeld, Carter Favreau, and Jesse Leyble all registered shots on target and it was the ricochet off of Leyble's attempt that led to Allman's goal.
- Pfeiffer's response to the Monarchs' opening salvo was to score the next 14 goals of the game. The Falcons were aided by a three-minute, non-releasable penalty on Methodist that resulted in four man-up goals, which ballooned a 3-1 Pfeiffer lead to 7-1.
- Favreau finally stopped the Pfeiffer run with a man-up goal in the second quarter. Favreau added another goal right before half after recovering the ground ball on a Tyler Bennett faceoff win and 39 seconds later, Leyble scored after taking advantage of a Hunter Vaughan caused turnover.
- The Monarchs' best scoring run came in the third quarter when they scored three consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 20-7. Matt Pemberton and Allman scored 18 seconds apart and Allman added his third goal of the game with 8:24 left in the third period.
- The Monarchs' best quarter, however, was the fourth quarter when they outscored Pfeiffer, 5-2. The period featured goals from Bennett, Leyble, Pemberton, Matt Benz, and Mark Chatt.
