Theron Earns Singles Win at N.C. Wesleyan

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C.  Methodist freshman Jordan Theron picked up the lone point for the Monarchs in an 8-1 USA South Athletic Conference men's tennis loss Saturday at North Carolina Wesleyan College.

With but one conference match left on the schedule, Saturday's result eliminated Methodist from earning a spot in the conference postseason tournament. Only the top two teams from each division will qualify for the league's postseason tournament -- a conference change to the postseason due to the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic -- and the Monarchs, at 2-2 in the East Division, trail second-place Averett (4-1), which has completed its conference slate.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: N.C. Wesleyan def. Methodist, 8-1
Records: Methodist 6-13 (2-2 USA South), N.C. Wesleyan 18-2 (5-0)
Location: Slick Family Tennis Center; Rocky Mount, N.C.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Battling Bishops earned the opening two points of the match with identical 8-2 wins at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, but Methodist's Jordan Theron and Quinn McNamara pushed hard at the 3-doubles spot to prevent an NCW sweep.
  • The Monarch pair took Max Robinson and Tshepo Mosarwa to the brink, however the Battling Bishops tandem was able to prevail with an 8-7 tiebreak victory.
  • N.C. Wesleyan won the next five points in the match, taking Nos. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles in straight sets.
  • Theron and Roberto Puig were still out on the 1-singles court, though. Theron took the opening set in a 7-6 tiebreak, and the second set was even at 4-4 before Puig was forced to retire from the match, earning Theron the victory.
  • Theron, only a freshman, is 4-0 in his league matches in single play, all in the No. 1 slot. He is 11-3 overall with an active six-match win streak. His losses came in matches against Division II University of Mount Olive, and in D-I bouts against University of Richmond and in a three-setter against College of Charleston.
UP NEXT
Methodist will roll with a split squad on its next competitive date. One group will travel to Guilford College for a Sunday-afternoon non-conference match, while another group entertains Mary Baldwin University in a conference match Sunday beginning at 1 p.m.
