CARY, N.C. It was a tough outing for Methodist baseball as William Peace University took both ends of a USA South Athletic Conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. The visiting Monarchs lost the first game, 7-5, after being unable to complete a rally, and Game 2's 19-0 loss was particularly rough for Methodist.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In Game 1, the Monarchs scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit to 7-5. Casey Nichols reached first base on a hit by pitch and advanced two bases from consecutive wild pitches. Rob Wilkerson brought Nichols home with a single. The Monarchs' final chance to tie came in the eighth inning with Hunter Hollman at second base and Ryan Hill, the tying run, at first.
- The first three Methodist runs came via homeruns. Hill had a two-run homer in the second inning for a 2-0 lead and Spencer Nelson hit a solo blast to centerfield to tie the game at 3-3 in the fourth after the Pacers scored three runs in the third.
- William Peace retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth, scoring a run after two doubles and adding two more runs in the fifth for a 6-3 lead. Wesley Hall had scored off an infield error in the sixth to make it a 6-4 game but the Pacers answered that score with a run of its own in the bottom of the inning.
- Game 2 was all William Peace as the Pacers had a 12-0 lead after three innings and added another seven runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Pacers had three homeruns, including a three-RBI blast by Nathan Holt in the second. William Peace also had two triples and two doubles. There was a bases clearing triple in the sixth.
- Hill had two hits in the first game to lead Methodist and Christian Yarbrough had two hits in Game 2, which led the team. Jacob Austin added a team-high two walks in Game 1.
- For the Pacers, Alec Seaton had two hits in each game and a total of three RBIs and three runs.
NEXT UP
- Methodist has a midweek league game against Mary Baldwin University Tuesday, April 20 at 3 p.m. in Staunton, Virginia. The single game is the conclusion of an April 6 doubleheader. The Monarchs won those games by a score of 15-2 and 20-0, both in five innings.
- The Pacers are on the road for a non-conference matchup against North Carolina Wesleyan College on Wednesday, April 21 at 3 p.m.
