7th Inning Magic Leads to 9th Inning Heroics

RALEIGH, N.C.  After some seventh inning magic, Methodist softball sealed the deal with a run in the ninth inning for a 6-5 win in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader against host William Peace University. The Monarchs' win avenged an earlier 4-1 loss on the first end of the Sunday afternoon doubleheader.

Trailing 3-2 entering the top of the seventh inning of Game 2, Methodist scored three runs to take a 5-3 lead but the Pacers had seventh inning magic of their own with a two-out, two-run homerun to force extra innings. Methodist finally put the game away in the ninth when Taylor Bowen scored Taylor Jones from third base. Jones' game-winning run capped a fantastic Game 2 performance with three runs scored, two hits, and one walk.

GAME NOTES
  • Seventh inning rallies from both teams forced extra innings. Down a run in the seventh inning of Game 2, Reagan Parks scored to tie the game after an RBI-single from Bethany Junker. Parks had led the inning off with a walk and Jones doubled in the next at-bat. The go-ahead run featured Bowen recording the RBI for a Jones' run, again. Methodist moved to a two-run, 5-3 lead when Heather Tsapp doubled to left field to score Junker. With two outs, the Pacers' Candice Smith delivered a prayer with a two-run homer to tie the game.
  • After the eighth innings ended with the winning run for both teams stranded on third base, Jones scored in the ninth after a sacrifice bunt from Junker and the RBI from Bowen. Alyssa Barwick, with the game-tying run on third base and just one out, recorded a flyout for out No. 2 and a strikeout for the third out and the Methodist win.
  • The Monarchs were trailing 3-1 in the sixth before scoring Caitlyn Holland. Holland had tripled with one out and Liz Schmitz scored her. Both teams had scored a run in the first inning and the score remained tied until the bottom of the fifth when the Pacers scored two runs off errors.
  • The difference in Game 1 was a three-run Pacers' homer by Kristina Mojica in the fourth inning for a 4-0 lead. William Peace had previously scored a run in the first inning.
  • Methodist got on the scoreboard with a run in the fifth when Tsapp scored Bethany Junker with a single. However, the inning ended with the bases loaded after three hits and two William Peace errors. Haley Potter's infield single moved Holland to second and Tsapp to third with two outs. The fourth inning for the Monarchs, when the deficit was still 1-0, ended with the bases loaded as well.
  • Holland had two hits in each game. Junker had three hits in the first game and a hit in Game 2. Also recording multiple hits were Jones in the second game and Tsapp in the first. Tsapp's three total RBIs led the team.
  • Barwick won a consecutive start after earning her first collegiate win in the pitcher's circle Saturday. Brittany Jones was in the pitcher's circle for the first game, she allowed just five hits and three earned runs in six innings.
