FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. A tightly contested doubleheader resulted in Meredith College defeating visiting Methodist volleyball in four and five sets Friday afternoon. The first match, a 3-1 win for the Avenging Angels was a USA South Athletic Conference contest while the second match (non-conference) was the first five-setter of the season for the Monarchs, but Meredith won.
The highlight of the Monarchs' first doubleheader this season was
Geneva Barriger recording a career-high 20 kills in the second match.
Erica East provided 27 kills for the day and
Hannah Hewett totaled 87 assists.
And with 13 digs in the opening match, senior
Megan Andrews surpassed 1,000 for her career. Andrews added 16 more in the second match, elevating her career total to 1,026, which is seventh most in program history.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Methodist opened the first set of the second match strong, jumping out to an 8-1 lead and finding itself with a commanding 17-6 advantage. Meredith again recovered, this time with a 13-4 run to cut the deficit to 21-19. The Monarchs achieved set point with consecutive kills from Kaeli Ryan and Kendall Craig before a Meredith ball handling error cemented the Monarchs' first set win.
- The second and third sets were real tug-of-wars. Methodist used a 4-0 run to tie the second set at 23-23 before the Avenging Angels claimed the last two points. In the third set, an East kill gave Methodist a 24-20 lead and set point but Meredith went on a 6-0 run to steal the set for itself.
- The Monarchs forced a fifth and final set by winning the fourth game. Holding a slim 18-17 lead, Methodist came out of a timeout and scored consecutive kills from Barriger and Daija Young. East logged kills for points No. 24 and No. 25 for the set win. However, Meredith won the contest by recording the first eight points en route to a 15-8 victory.
- Methodist won the first sets of both matches. In the first matchup, Methodist trailed 7-2 before embarking on a 10-1 run to lead 12-8. Meredith recovered later to take a 22-21 lead but the Monarchs closed with four straight points (two Meredith attack errors and kills from Ryan and Megan Andrews) to take the set.
- The second sets of each match both went to Avenging Angels but they had to fight for each and every point. Meredith won the second set of the second match by a score of 32-30. Methodist had 17 kills in that set and rallied from a 24-20 deficit to tie the game, thanks to an East kill, but the Monarchs were undone by four errors that won the set for Meredith.
- Meredith had a high of 16 kills in the third and fourth sets to win the set and the conference match.
GAME NOTES
- East had 14 kills in the first match and Andrews had 13 kills, plus a team-high 13 digs (tied with Maddie Barga). Barriger added nine kills and 12 digs in that match. Hewett also had 12 digs in the first match, along with 40 assists.
- Hewett was even better in the second contest, scoring a team-high 47 assists and 17 digs. East had 13 kills in that game and Ryan had 10. Andrews and Barga each had 16 digs.
- The Monarchs' best hitting percentage came in the first set of each match. The first match featured 13 kills and a hitting percentage of .171 and Methodist was even better in the second set, logging a .250 hitting percentage with 14 kills.
- Ally Copenhaver led Meredith with 32 kills, including 21 in the second match to narrowly edge Barriger for the game-high.

- Methodist closes out its regular season in Rocky Mount, N.C. with a doubleheader against North Carolina Wesleyan College on Saturday, April 10. The 2 p.m. contest will be a USA South matchup and the 4 p.m. road match will be non-conference.
- The Avenging Angels travel to Staunton, Va. for a doubleheader against Mary Baldwin. The 2 p.m. contest will be a league match before the regular-season finale matchup at 4 p.m.
