Location: Averett Tennis Courts; Danville, Va.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Monarchs -- who had defeated the Cougars, 7-2, in a non-conference match early in the season -- got off to a good start Friday, sweeping three tough doubles matches to forge a 3-0 lead and set the tone for the afternoon.
- Toni Laney and Taylor Jackson teamed up at 1-doubles to capture the first point of the day and their fourth consecutive win. The Methodist duo handed the Averett tandem of Louise Hovhammar and Eleanor Crane an 8-4 defeat.
- The No. 3 pairing of Jill Lawrence and Kamdyn Balko replicated that score in their victory, leaving Abby Caddick and Sydni Lewis to finish the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 2.
- Laney was first to finish in singles action, rolling past Crane, 6-1, 6-0, in the No. 2 spot.
- Almost as quick, and with the match-clinching point, was Olivia Ward at 6-singles, in a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nakia-Lee Goodall. Also surrendering just two games, and picking up the next Methodist point at the No. 5 position was Valeria Matute with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph.
- After Averett earned its lone point with a win at 4-singles, Methodist picked up one more point under unfortunate circumstances as the Cougars' Inka Zeilstra was forced to retire by injury in a match with Methodist's Jill Lawrence.
- The final point of the afternoon was unfinished as Caddick and Hovhammer's match at No. 1 was halted because of lightning and not resumed.
UP NEXT
- Methodist will travel to North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, N.C., for its next match, a conference bout against the Battling Bishops on Thursday, April 15.
- Averett is scheduled to play host Pfeiffer University in a USA South match Sunday afternoon.
