Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Suffers 1st Defeat

SALISBURY, Md.  Laura Harris scored in the second minute of the game for an early Methodist lead, but St. Mary's College of Maryland found the back of the net once in each half to notch a 2-1 non-conference victory over the Monarchs Sunday afternoon at the Sea Gull Women's Soccer Classic.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: St. Mary's def. Methodist, 2-1
Records: Methodist 2-1, St. Mary's 3-2
Event (host): Sea Gull Women's Soccer Classic (Salisbury University)
Location: Sea Gull Soccer Complex; Salisbury, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist generated pressure in the early moments of the game as Caroline Uenking dropped a cross into the box from near the right touch line. Maddie Hernandez' shot from high on the back side was blocked by a defender, but the ball skipped forward and dropped in front of Harris who pushed a shot across the charging goalkeeper and inside the right post at the 1:47 mark.
  • Unfortunately for Methodist, that would end up being its only shot of the opening 45 minutes. St. Mary's would generate 10 shots after Harris' goal and would find the equalizer at the 20-minute mark on a corner kick opportunity.
  • The game-winner for the Seahawks came in the 74th when a shot from the top right corner of the box was initially saved by Monarch goalie Caley Justice, but the uncontrolled rebound became a tap-in for SMC's Ella Raines.
  • Methodist generated three more shots during second-half action, but one would be blocked by a defender and the other two would skirt wide of the frame.
MORE TO IT
  • Both starting goalie Mary Newman as well as Justice, who took over between the pipes at the start of the second half, would finish with two saves and one goal allowed.
  • St. Mary's netminder Emma Tawney would earn the win, despite not making any saves in the game.
  • Diana Clay scored the tying goal in the first half for SMC.
  • The Seahawks would finish with a 20-4 advantage in shots, and a 6-1 edge in shots on goal.
