THE ESSENTIALS
Final scores: Meredith def. Methodist, 3-0 (15-25, 20-25, 13-25)
Records: Methodist 8-5 (0-1 USA South), Meredith 7-4 (1-0)
Location: Weatherspoon Gymnasium; Raleigh, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Meredith came out quick, in the first set, by scoring the first four points. Methodist was able to get two of those points back, with an attack error by the Avenging Angles and a kill by Erica East, to make it 4-2. The Monarchs kept it within striking distance for a good portion of the set, being down as little as four points multiple times. Unfortunately, Methodist could not generate any runs down the stretch, as Meredith kept increasing their lead.
  • The Monarchs took their first lead of the match, in the second set, when they scored three of the first four points, to be up 3-1. The two squads picked up the intensity of the set for a while, when each side was matching run-for-run, until we got a score of 13-13. The Avenging Angles then went on a 3-point run to take a 16-13 advantage. The Monarchs got back within one point, after both Kendall Craig and Leann Sessoms each had a kill & combined had a block, to make it 19-18. Methodist was unable to comeback to win the set though.
  • Once again the Monarchs looked good to start the third set. After being down 2-1, a four point swing made it 5-2, in favor of Methodist. The Monarchs were able to maintain that lead for a bit, as the two teams matched each point for point. In the end, Meredith was able to get the better of Methodist, as the Avenging Angels used runs of five & seven points to secure the match.

STAT FACT
  • East led the team in kills with seven.
  • Hannah Hewett finished the match with 14 digs and a team-high 20 assists.
  • The Monarchs did record more blocks than Meredith, 7-3. Lead by Jeanana Fowler and Craig, who each had three.
