Methodist survives against Pfeiffer

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  A late second half goal by Laura Harris was enough to propel Methodist to a 2-1 victory over USA South Athletic Conference foe Pfeiffer University Tuesday night, at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After being deadlock 0-0 at halftime, Natalia Marshall-Hewitt gave the Monarchs the one goal edge in the 53rd minute. A Methodist throw in saw Marshall-Hewitt was on the receiving end. After dribbling the ball past her defender, she took a shot, at the top of the box, where it went over the out-stretch keeper into the top right corner.
  • In the 82nd minute, the Falcons scored the equalizer, which was their first goal this season scored. Julia Hayes, of Pfeiffer, managed to kick the ball past the Monarch's goalie, from a pass off a free kick.
  • Just when it felt like momentum was changing, Methodist put a stop to it, in the 85th minute. Madison Brunson was able to steal the ball back for the Monarch inside of Falcon's territory. From there she found an open seem to pass off to Rachel Johnson, who one-touched to Harris for the game winner.  
NUMBERS
  • Even though corner kicks mirrored each other, 4-4, for both teams, Pfeiffer showed they controlled the ball more in the second half, with a 4-2 edge in their opportunities.
  • Methodist had an eight shot, 14-6, advantage, but only mustard three more shots on goal, 5-2, over the Falcons
  • Besides Marshall-Hewitt and Harris, Tatiana Lourenco-Shiber was the only other Monarch to register a shot on goal.

  • Methodist hits the road this Saturday for an 11:30 a.m. USA South match against host Mary Baldwin University.
  • Pfeiffer, still seeking its first victory of the season, will stay on the road for a USA South game against North Carolina Wesleyan College, on Saturday.
