GREENVILLE, S.C. Methodist volleyball bounced back Friday evening from a season-opening 3-1 defeat to Johnson (Tenn.) University with a rally in the Monarchs' second match, fighting off a match point before winning the final two sets over Lancaster Bible College (LBC) to earn a come-from-behind 3-2 victory on the opening night of the Bob Jones (Univ.) HOW IT HAPPENED
- The rallies in the fourth and fifth sets against LBC would never have happened if not for a tide-turning rally early in the second set, trailing 1-0 in the match.
- The Chargers raced out to an 8-1 lead only to have Methodist charge back with an 11-0 run to provide a lead it wouldn't surrender in evening up the match.
- The deciding set against LBC saw five lead changes including the final flip initiated by Fowler's timely block.
- Against Johnson, Methodist dug itself a 2-0 hole before getting up off the mat to take the third set from the Royals. Their first lead of the set came off a Craig kill to finally push the Monarchs in front, 17-16.
- The Royals responded with three unanswered points, but a Methodist timeout proved advantageous as it came out of the short break and scored the next three points, forcing a Johnson timeout.
- The Monarchs scored five of the final eight points to earn the set win but couldn't find the magic they displayed later in the night, falling to Johnson in what would be a deciding fourth set.
MORE TO IT
- Craig posted team highs in kills in both matches for the Monarchs, knocking down 13 against Johnson and 12 more in the LBC match.
- Fowler was second in kills against Johnson with eight, and Erica East was next in the LBC bout with 10 kills.
- Her match-saving block against LBC was just one of four in the contest, adding to one block the freshman notched in the early match. Craig also totaled four blocks in the win over Lancaster Bible.
- Defensive specialist Janie Harmelink came up with team-high digs in both matches, scoring 18 against Johnson and 19 against LBC.
UP NEXT
- Seeding for Saturday's matches was determined on the standings in the Court 1 and 2 pods
- Based on Friday evening's results, Methodist, Johnson and Lancaster Bible each finish the night with 1-1 records within their Court 2 pod. First, second and third place in the pod was then determined by number of sets won, giving LBC the No. 1 seed, Johnson the No. 2 seed, and Methodist the third seed.
- That puts the Monarchs in a Saturday 10 a.m. elimination match on Court 2 against Columbia College. The winner advances to take on LBC at 12 p.m., with the winner of that match advancing to the 2 p.m. championship match.
