Strong Third Quarter Leads to Monarch Win

RALEIGH, N.C. Methodist women's basketball pulls away in third quarter of USA South Athletic Conference contest on their way to a 62-46 road victory over Meredith College Tuesday night in Weatherspoon Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After two miss threes by the Avenging Angels to start the game, freshman Jillian Peterson of the Monarchs scored the first two baskets. Fellow classmates Kiley Hicks and Rebecca McGaughnea joined the action by scoring six unanswered points to make the score 16-5.
  • Meredith closed the gap to 19-13 by outscoring Methodist 8-3 in the final four minutes of the first frame. In the second quarter, the Avenging Angels tied the score at 25-25 but the Monarchs were able to edge out a slim 28-27 lead heading into the half.
  • Coming out of the break on an offensive explosion were the Monarchs by going on a 14-2 run in the first minutes, with Zykeria Jenkins scoring nine and Jessica Drake chipping in five of those points. The final minute of the third saw Methodist score seven more points to take a 54-37 advantage heading into the final quarter.
  • Drake opened up the fourth by dropping the first seven points to increase the Monarch lead to over 20. Melissa D'Oleo would score the last point for Methodist on a free throw in the final seconds of the game.

  • The Monarchs took advantage of Meredith mistakes by forcing 20 turnovers and scoring 24 points off that.
  • Drake finished the game with a game-high 17 points. Fellow Methodist players Hicks and Jenkins also ended the game with double digit points, respectively 15 and 11.
