Make it Five in a Row for Methodist

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Methodist women's basketball earned their fifth consecutive win after defeating USA South Athletic Conference opponent Salem College 81-60 in Varsity Gymnasium this Saturday afternoon.

The 81 team points scored tonight was the first time since December of 2017 that the Monarchs reached over 80+ points.

JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Methodist def. Salem, 81-60
Records: Methodist 6-4 (5-1 USA South), Meredith 1-12 (0-7)
Location: Varsity Gymnasium; Winston-Slaem, North Carolina

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Methodist had their way in this contest right at the start of it. The team opened up by scoring the first seven points and never looked back from that point forward. The Spirits did come close to the lead when the score was 11-8 but a three by Melissa D'Oleo ended that near threat.
  • Kiley Hicks put the Monarchs into a double digit lead, 23-13, to begin the second quarter. The next few minutes saw the offense quiet down before spate runs of five & seven nothing started to really spread the difference into the score, which led to it being 43-26 at half.
  • The third quarter saw Salem get the better of the Monarchs by outscoring Methodist 17-14. It started off with the Spirits getting the first four points followed by the Monarchs doing the same. The rest of frame saw much of the same action from the two squads heading into the final period.
  • For majority of the fourth, it was being played out similarly to the third quarter. This time though it was Methodist that won the frame. With about three minutes left in the game, Emmenia Lynch of the Monarch sparked a late 9-0 run including Alyssa Shazer getting in on the action by scoring four of those nine points.
MORE TO IT
  • Leading all scorers was Hicks with a season-high 19 points. Two other Methodist players reached the 15+ points plateau, D'Oleo with 16 and Aniyah Tate with 15.
  • Though she did not score double digit points, Aneesa Irizarry had a solid stat line of six points, six rebounds, and seven assists.
UP NEXT
  • Methodist has the couple of days off before returning to the March F. Riddle center for a non-conference bout with Guilford College on Monday, at 6 PM.
  • Salem's next contest is not until Wednesday when they host Southern Virginia in USA South play at 6 PM.
