In the first-ever meeting between the Methodist University football team and Belhaven University, the Blazers got the better of the Monarchs in this USA South Athletic Conference showdown. JUST THE FACTS
Final score: Belhaven def. Methodist, 34-27
Records: Methodist 2-3 (1-1 USA South), Belhaven 3-1 (1-1)
Location: Monarch Stadium; Fayetteville, North Carolina
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It did not take long for the Monarchs to score the first touchdown of the contest. An exchange mistake by the Blazers quarterback and center got the ball on the ground, where Damian Harris of Methodist recovered the ball at the bottom of the pile. One play later Keyshaun Pete ran the ball from 15 yards out.
- Belhaven would respond back on their next drive with a touchdown of their own. A short pass from Tim Johnson to running back Kolbe Blunt for 25 yards, along with two Monarch penalties of about 30 yards, led to Johnson finding Zach Hammett in the end zone for a 2-yard score.
- The Blazers got the ball back after a three-and-out by Methodist offense. A few plays into the drive, Andrew Bradshaw got in front a Johnson pass to tip the ball and eventually into the hands of his Monarch teammate Roderic Christian Jr. for an interception.
- That turnover was the start of a seven-play march that covered 64 yards and capped off with a 3-yard run by Pete for his second touchdown of the game. The 14-7 advantage would be short lived as Johnson of Belhaven connect with Phabian Carter on a 34-yard touchdown pass on the ensuing drive to tie the game at 14-14.
- Methodist reclaimed the lead again early on in the second quarter. Quarterback Brandon Bullins found his favorite target Kobe Praylow twice on a drive for plays of 47 yards and an eight-yard touchdown reception. The Monarchs would miss the point after touchdown to make the score 20-14.
- The Blazers kept this back-and-forth game going by finding the end zone again on their next possession. Devin Daniels made the score 20-20 after his eight-yard run but Belhaven's placekicker Constantine Hontzas missed the PAT by pushing the ball to the left to keep.
- With a little over five minutes left until halftime, Methodist put themselves back in front 27-20. Seeing a stead doze of carries was Tyquan Eaddy on this drive, who finished it off with a 1-yard plunge.
- The first 18 minutes and 47 seconds into the second half consisting of the entire 3rd quarter and the start of the 4th saw no score. With 11:21 left in the contest, Belhaven tied the score up again at 27-27 off a Johnson 33-yard pass to D'Ante Gallashaw.
- The Blazers would take their first lead of the game late in the fourth when Johnson handed the ball off to Blunt, who scampered in for a touchdown from 10 yards out.
- Eventually the Monarchs got the ball back with 1:49 on clock at their own 1-yard line for one last chance to score. Alas no comeback was in the making as Bullins pass was intercepted by TJ Hersey of Belhaven to seal the contest.
